Probably not, as it turns out — or at least, not in the way most outdoor guides describe it. What's actually happening to your face on a cold windy UK hill day is more contested than the standard advice admits, and the difference matters, because the usual explanation leads people to skip the one thing that would have prevented it.
What's actually happening to your face
The mainstream dermatological view
Most dermatologists take the position that windburn, as popularly understood, is a misnomer. The redness and stinging you come home with is a sunburn acquired in cool or cloudy conditions and misattributed to the wind. This isn't a new or fringe argument — it was demonstrated as early as 1936 by the English skin specialist Charles Howard White, and it remains the majority view.
The mechanism is more interesting than the folk version, because it's the wind's comfort that causes the problem rather than any direct damage. Cold moving air suppresses the sensation of heat and burning on your skin. Without that feedback, you don't seek shade, you don't reapply anything, and you stay out in the UV for hours longer than you would on a warm day. The wind isn't burning you. It's stopping you noticing that the sun is.
The specific claim you'll see repeated across outdoor blogs — that wind strips the skin's protective lipids — has been directly challenged by dermatologists as not what's happening.
The case that windburn is a distinct thing
It isn't unanimous, and it would be overstating things to call it settled. The Skin Cancer Foundation acknowledges there's no medical consensus on what windburn actually is, and some clinicians maintain it's a separate condition driven by cold dry air stripping natural oils from the skin.
There's also a documented interaction that supports taking wind seriously: wind can reduce the skin's natural protection against UV, meaning more radiation penetrates than would otherwise. So even on the sunburn-misattribution reading, wind isn't a bystander.
Where that leaves you
The honest synthesis, and the one to act on:
Cold dry wind genuinely does dry and irritate skin. That part is real. Tightness, flaking, chapping, general rawness — these are barrier disruption from low humidity and moving air, and an occlusive moisturiser genuinely helps with them.
But the redness and stinging that looks and feels like a burn is very likely UV. And the treatment for that is sun protection, not moisturiser.
Which means the practical answer isn't "windburn or sunburn" — it's both, and you need to defend against both. The most common mistake is treating it as a moisturiser problem and leaving the sun cream at home.
Why UK hills make this worse than you'd expect
Two things stack up as you gain height, and both are easy to underestimate from the car park.
It gets colder faster than people expect. The environmental lapse rate — how much air temperature drops with altitude — runs at roughly 0.6–1°C per 100 metres in UK conditions, varying with how moist the air is. Dry air cools at close to 1°C per 100m; saturated air at around half that. On a 900m Lakeland summit, that's comfortably 5–9°C colder than the valley before wind chill enters into it.
UV goes up while it feels like it's going down. This is the trap. UV exposure increases with altitude, and reflection compounds it hard — snow and ice bounce back up to 80% of UV radiation, which can roughly double your effective exposure on a winter hill day. Meanwhile the wind is making it feel cold enough that sunburn seems implausible.
Cold, bright, windy, snow underfoot, high on a Scottish ridge is close to the worst-case combination for your face, and it's exactly the day most people don't put sun cream on.
The Met Office, BMC and Royal Meteorological Society all publish mountain-specific guidance on this, and mountain forecasts differ meaningfully from valley ones for exactly these reasons.
Wind chill: what it does and doesn't tell you
Wind chill describes how much faster exposed skin loses heat in moving air compared with still air at the same temperature. The air temperature itself doesn't change — what changes is the rate at which your skin loses heat to it.
For your face, the useful reading is: high wind chill means air that will dry exposed skin quickly, and — importantly — air that will mask the sensation of sun exposure while it does. Treat a high wind chill figure as a prompt to cover up and to apply sun protection, not as evidence that UV isn't a concern.
What actually helps
Physical coverage first
A buff or neck gaiter pulled up over the lower face and nose is the single most effective piece of kit here. Light enough to wear all day, easy to drop when you don't need it, and it blocks both wind and UV from the areas that suffer most.
A balaclava for genuinely harsh conditions — winter tops, exposed ridges in strong wind. Covers cheeks, nose and neck while still breathing. Worth carrying even when you don't expect to need it.
Wraparound sunglasses or glacier glasses. These protect the thin skin around the eyes, cut squinting, and matter far more than people assume on snow, where reflected glare is coming at you from below as well as above.
A hood that seals properly. A well-adjusted hood with a wired peak reduces the exposed area in the first place. If your hood doesn't seal around your face, everything else you're doing is working harder than it needs to — worth factoring into which shell you buy.
Sun cream — yes, in winter, yes, when it's windy
Given how much of what people call windburn is likely UV damage, this stops being optional. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on the nose, cheeks, ears and under the chin — under-chin coverage matters specifically because of reflection off snow. Reapply on long days.
If you take one thing from this article: the cold windy days that don't feel like sunburn weather are the days people get burnt, precisely because they don't feel like it.
Occlusive skincare as the barrier layer
For the genuine dryness-and-chapping side, you want an occlusive — something forming a physical barrier rather than a light lotion that absorbs and disappears. Look for these on the ingredients list:
- Petrolatum — the most effective occlusive available, and cheap
- Lanolin — very effective, though a minority of people react to it
- Dimethicone — lighter feel, less greasy, good under sun cream
- Ceramides — support barrier repair rather than just sealing
Apply before you set off, and again if skin starts feeling tight partway through. Layer it under sun cream, not over.
The mistake most people make
It isn't forgetting moisturiser. It's assuming a cold, windy day is a low-UV day — and treating a raw red face as a wind problem when the wind's main contribution was stopping you notice the sun.
Carry a buff even when the trailhead is mild. Put sun cream on even when it's cold. Both, every time, on bright winter hill days.
