Waterproof doesn't always mean waterproof
Water-repellent, water-resistant and waterproof mean three different things on a jacket label. Here's what separates them, and why seams matter as much as the fabric.

Walk into any outdoor retailer and you'll see the word "waterproof" on jackets at every price point. A £40 supermarket shell. A £450 Gore-Tex hardshell. Both say waterproof. They are not the same thing and understanding the difference matters before you spend serious money on serious kit.
The outdoor industry uses three distinct terms that sound similar but mean very different things in practice. Getting them confused is one of the most common reasons people end up with the wrong jacket for the conditions they're going into.
Water-repellent, water-resistant, and waterproof
Water-repellent
Water-repellent describes how the surface of a fabric behaves. A water-repellent jacket has a DWR (durable water repellent) finish applied to the outer face fabric that causes water to bead up and roll off rather than soaking in. You'll see this demonstrated in product videos, water sitting in tight spheres on the surface of the jacket.
The important thing to understand is that DWR is a surface treatment, not a waterproofing system. It doesn't stop water getting through the fabric. It slows it down. A jacket can be highly water-repellent and still let water through in sustained rain if there's no membrane underneath.
Almost every jacket (from a £30 packable to a £500 hardshell) has some level of DWR. The presence of DWR alone tells you very little about how waterproof a jacket actually is.
This is also where a lot of confusion starts. A windshell like the Rab Vital is made from a tightly woven nylon with a DWR finish and no membrane at all. It sheds a passing shower and blocks wind extremely well. It is not a waterproof jacket, and the brand doesn't claim it is, but the marketing language sits close enough that it's easy to buy the wrong thing.
Water-resistant
Water-resistant means the fabric has been woven tightly or treated in a way that slows water penetration. A water-resistant jacket will handle a light shower without letting water through. It will not handle sustained rain, wind-driven rain, or the kind of prolonged wet conditions you encounter on a Scottish hillside in autumn.
Many softshells and travel jackets are described as water-resistant. They're useful for everyday use in variable weather. They're not what you want on a multi-hour hill walk in a UK winter.
Waterproof
Genuinely waterproof, in the technical outdoor sense, means three things together:
- a waterproof membrane bonded into the fabric
- a tested hydrostatic head rating behind the claim
- sealed seams
All three. It's a system claim, not a fabric claim. When a jacket is described as waterproof without any of these specifics listed, treat it with caution.
The rating behind the claim
Hydrostatic head is the standard measure of how waterproof a fabric is: a swatch is clamped over a sealed tube and a column of water is raised above it until moisture pushes through. The height of that column in millimetres becomes the rating.
The UK legal minimum to call a fabric "waterproof" is just 1,500mm, which as Snow + Rock point out is almost meaninglessly low for outdoor use. For UK hillwalking you want considerably more.

Why seams matter as much as the fabric rating
This is the part product pages gloss over, and it's where a lot of "waterproof" jackets quietly fall down.
A jacket's hydrostatic head rating describes the fabric only. It says nothing about seams, zips, or construction. Every stitch through a fabric creates needle holes, and those holes are a direct path for water regardless of how good the fabric's rating is. A 20,000mm fabric with unsealed seams will let water in at every seam line.
Seam tape, a heat-bonded waterproof strip applied to the inside of the seam, closes those gaps.
The distinction that matters:
- Fully taped means every seam in the garment is sealed.
- Critically taped means only the most exposed seams are sealed, usually shoulders and hood.
"Seam sealed" on its own, without the word "fully", frequently means critically taped. So does "taped seams" unqualified. Read the spec carefully, and if a listing won't tell you which, assume the cheaper option.
Zips are the other weak point. A jacket can have fully taped seams and still let water in through an unprotected front zip. Look for either a laminated waterproof zip or a storm flap covering a standard one. On serious mountain jackets you'll usually find both.
What to check before you buy
Four things, in order:
- Hydrostatic head rating. If the seller won't tell you, that's informative in itself.
- Seam construction. Fully taped, not critically taped.
- Breathability and, importantly, how the brand measures it, because the figures aren't directly comparable between manufacturers.
- Front zip. Waterproof zip or storm flap.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?
Waterproof means the fabric has a membrane, a tested hydrostatic head rating, and sealed seams, so it resists water under sustained pressure. Water-resistant means the fabric slows water penetration but will eventually wet through in sustained rain. They are not the same thing, and only one of them is a technical claim.
What does "fully taped seams" mean on a waterproof jacket?
Every seam in the garment has been sealed with waterproof tape on the inside, closing the needle holes left by stitching. It's different from critically taped seams, where only the most exposed seams are sealed. Look for the word "fully" explicitly, "seam sealed" on its own often means critically taped.
Can a jacket be water-repellent but not waterproof?
Yes, and many are. DWR is a surface finish that makes water bead and roll off. A jacket can have excellent DWR and no waterproof membrane underneath, meaning it will wet through in sustained rain. Windshells are the clearest example: highly water-repellent, not waterproof.
Does a more expensive jacket mean more waterproof?
Not reliably. Price correlates with durability, breathability, fit, and construction quality more than with the raw waterproof rating. A £120 jacket at 20,000mm with fully taped seams is more waterproof on paper than a £300 jacket at 10,000mm. What the extra money usually buys is a jacket that stays that way for longer.
Is a windproof jacket waterproof?
No. Windproof fabrics like Rab's Atmos or Pertex Quantum are tightly woven and usually carry a DWR finish, but they have no waterproof membrane. They'll shrug off a shower and then wet through. They're excellent as a lightweight extra layer and no substitute for a shell in real rain.
