Why your expensive waterproof jacket feels like it's leaking when it isn't
Wet inside a Gore-Tex jacket usually isn't a leak. How to tell condensation from genuine water ingress, and the home test that settles it in ten minutes.

You spend £400 on a Gore-Tex jacket. You go out in the rain. You come back wet. The jacket, clearly, is broken.
Except it probably isn't. This is one of the most common complaints about expensive waterproof jackets, and in the large majority of cases the jacket is doing exactly what it's designed to do. Working out which situation you're in, condensation or a genuine leak, takes about ten minutes and saves you an unnecessary trip back to the shop.
The most common cause: the outer fabric has wetted out
The most frequent reason a waterproof jacket feels wet has nothing to do with the waterproof membrane. It's the outer face fabric becoming saturated while the membrane underneath remains perfectly functional.
Waterproof breathable jackets work by letting water vapour from your body pass outward through the membrane while blocking liquid water from coming in. That outward transfer depends on a humidity difference across the membrane. When the outer face fabric saturates, that film of water on the outside kills the difference. Moisture from your body can't get out. It condenses on the inside surface of the jacket instead.
You feel wet from the inside. It feels identical to a leak. It isn't one, the membrane is fine, and the DWR finish on the face fabric has degraded.
The second cause: you're out-sweating the membrane
No waterproof breathable membrane can keep pace with someone working hard uphill with a pack on. Sustained aerobic effort in cool wet conditions produces far more moisture per hour than any membrane can move outward, and the highest-rated fabrics on the market are still working at a fraction of that rate.
As Explore Wild Wales put it, some condensation inside a shell during hard effort is a physical inevitability rather than a product defect. This is why experienced hillwalkers open pit zips, drop the front zip, and vent at the collar on the way up, managing moisture by ventilation rather than expecting the membrane to do all of it.
Worth knowing before you conclude a jacket has failed: if you only ever notice dampness after a steep climb, the jacket may be performing perfectly.
How to tell condensation from a genuine leak
The two feel similar in the moment but look quite different on inspection.
Condensation is generalised. You feel clammy across the back and chest, particularly after sustained effort. The inside of the jacket is damp rather than wet, and the dampness is spread fairly evenly. It correlates with how hard you were working, not with where the rain was hitting.
A genuine leak is localised. It shows as a specific wet patch in a particular place, along a seam line, where a pack strap has been rubbing, around the front zip, at the shoulder. It appears in the same spot every time, and it often correlates with a visible wear point in the fabric or a lifted edge of seam tape.
The quick check: take the jacket off and look at the inside. Even dampness across the torso points to condensation. A defined patch with dry fabric around it points to a leak.
The shower test

Put a dry base layer on, put the jacket on over it, and stand under a shower or garden hose for several minutes. Move around. Raise your arms. Pay attention to the seams and the zip.
You're not exerting yourself, so you're generating almost no sweat. Any water that reaches the base layer got there through the jacket.
- Water comes through at a specific point → genuine leak, and you now know exactly where.
- Base layer stays dry, but you still feel damp after real use on the hill → condensation.
Run the test on a clean, dry jacket. A jacket that's dirty or already saturated will wet out during the test and muddy the result.
What to do about each
If it's condensation, the fix is restoring the DWR on the face fabric so it stops wetting out, usually a wash with a technical cleaner and a spell in the tumble dryer, and reproofing only if that doesn't bring the beading back.
Alongside that, use the venting the jacket has. Pit zips exist for this.
If it's a genuine leak, work out what failed. Seam tape lifting at the edges is common in older jackets and is repairable by specialist gear repair services, Lancashire Sports Repairs and Scottish Mountain Gear both do this in the UK. Membrane delamination, where the layers separate and the fabric looks bubbled or crazed from the inside, is usually the end of the jacket's useful life.
If it's a Gore-Tex product, their guaranteed-to-keep-you-dry warranty is worth pursuing, and they take genuine claims seriously. Go through the DWR restoration first, because that's the first thing they'll ask about.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the inside of my Gore-Tex jacket wet?
Usually because moisture from your body can't escape outward through the membrane, most often because the outer fabric has wetted out and the DWR has failed, so the moisture condenses on the inside instead. This is not a leak. Washing with a technical cleaner and tumble drying on gentle heat resolves it in most cases.
How do I know if my waterproof jacket is leaking or just condensation?
Condensation is generalised and appears after sustained effort. A leak is a specific wet patch in the same place every time, regardless of how hard you're working. To confirm: wear the jacket over a dry base layer under a shower for a few minutes. Water reaching the base layer at a specific point is a leak.
Is it normal to get damp inside a waterproof jacket?
Some condensation during hard aerobic effort is normal and unavoidable, no membrane can move moisture as fast as a person climbing with a pack produces it. What isn't normal is being wet through in light rain at walking pace, which points to DWR failure or a genuine leak.
Can seam tape be repaired?
Yes. Lifting or peeling seam tape is a standard repair for specialist gear repair services and usually costs a fraction of replacing the jacket. It's worth doing on a good shell whose fabric is otherwise sound.
My jacket is expensive. Why does it still feel wet?
Price doesn't prevent DWR degradation. The finish wears off with abrasion, body oils, UV and washing regardless of what the jacket cost. An unmaintained £400 jacket will wet out just as readily as a cheap one, maintenance matters more than price here.
